Some Thoughts on Gift Giving
Why are you buying that gift? Because it's Christmas, Hannukah, a birthday, etc.? Well, that's only the occasion. So we've done some research on the deeper reasons of why people give gifts. Here are a few thoughts on the subject:
- Gift giving affirms the continued importance of social ties.
- Gifts are physical signs of connection to others.
- In the end, it's not the occasion that brought it about, but the establishment of the relationship.
- Gift giving is a form of communication. It's one way people communicate to those important to them. It's a way to evoke love and respect in a tangible form.
- Gifts serve as tangible reminders of a relationship. So gifts that are used often by the recipient, may have added impact.
- Choosing a gift allows you to show that you know what the person likes, and have taken the time to find it.
- There is a pleasure in gift giving... getting pleasure by knowing you're making the recipient happy.

Anniversary Gifts
Giving something silver for a 25th wedding anniversary, or gold for a 50th anniversary are old traditions. It seems appropriate to celebrate a milestone occasion with a gift of rarity and value. Silver is a precious metal, lovely and yet slightly malleable. Gold is rarer still and even more precious. It’s why we now call them the silver anniversary and gold anniversary.
In the early 1900s, gift lists were gradually created, matching a material to each of the other anniversary years. Though there are obviously commercial overtones in these origins, a century later it’s now taken on the patina of tradition.
